Bringing gaming insights into the social environnment

Recently foursquare was the most popular location based social game; it uses people’s everyday travels in the real world as the gameboard rewarding you for ‘checking in’ where you visit.  Then the other day @100ftzombie (aka Ash from Soap) posted this video and it’s an eye-opener to anyone thinking about developing social software or campaigns. Booyah (a stateside company) has very quickly developed a rival to foursquare that in a few short weeks has 600,000 subscribers, twice that of foursquare (which has been around for about 6months). The game is called Mytown. And takes the idea of location based gaming to the next level. By applying a few simple game mechanics they have created a product that is instantly more likeable. It’s not available for the Aussie market yet but I’m looking forward to it when it does.

In the video Keith explains how they approached the app from a gaming perspective and the make-up of their company enabled them to feed great ideas at every part of the process to build a superior product. I found you don’t have to watch the whole thing as it gets a bit repetitive.

Ten Food Rules to Live by

On the NYT health blog, food writer Michael Pollan asked readers for new food rules that everyone should try to live by; declaring people “defer to the voices of science and industry when it comes to eating.

Here they are:

1. Enjoy food. Not too much. Then get some exercise.

2. There’s nothing wrong with eating animals. Most of them do it too.

3. Don’t be afraid to eat anything your mother once served you.

4. It’s not the cupcake’s fault.

5. Don’t eat out of a dumpster. Even if it’s free and vegan.

6. One cheeseburger won’t make you fat, and one salad won’t make you thin.

7. Don’t be a prude: Eat promiscuously.

8. Life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. (Anthony Bourdain)

9. In spite of food fads, fitness programs, and health concerns, we must never lose sight of a beautifully conceived meal. (Julia Child)

10. Life is too short for self-hatred and celery sticks. (Marilyn Wann)

Myspace Fan Video

This site is doing the rounds at the mo (in this region mainly thanks to the FWA and @lynchy posting it on twitter the other day) but I decided to give it ‘The One’ spot anyway… Why? It’s the sort of thing that my first impression is “So What? Is that it?” But then it becomes apparent that this is an idea that’s so simple that somebody else should’ve done it before now. And the fact that I can upload my shitty cartoon Facebook profile pic in there and it looks great shows the level of craft that’s gone into this simple idea. Probably not a Cannes gold but a very solid silver.

:: Tea & Petit Fours

I totally forgot about this booking so when I finally found out i was pretty exstatic. I even tried not to go too hard the night before (sort of successful).

We decided against the matching wine and went with a bottle of  Pinot Gris; which seemed to go with everything. Can't remember what i ordered though... I'm pretty sure it was from Malborough NZ and it was their last.

All the food was awesome except the only course I didn't think worked was the 'Octopus Ravioli'. It was extremely rich and was a bit too much in-between two light courses. We thought the rest of the meat dishes would be just as rich but were plesently suprised they weren't. That said everything else was awesome. And the ocean trought was great (but you'd expect that for one of the worlds most famous dishes).

The staff rocked and were attentive without being intrusive. And the garden was awesome... so calming.

There were some tragic people around us though, especially the couple that constantly argued and man she was a bitch - she was basically telling her boyfriend he was useless when she couldn't turn the mirror on herself for even a little.

Dinner and a show - perfect!
